Grade 2

Social-emotional skills help students develop confidence, manage difficulties and think critically. This learning reflects current research and the government’s commitment to wellness and skill building, with the goal of helping students feel confident and able when learning mathematics.

The Data field provides students with opportunities to collect, organize, represent, and analyze data in order to make persuasive arguments, informed decisions, and predictions. This means that students will learn to consume data critically by determining if data is misrepresented and learning to create infographics to tell a story using data. Students will also make connections between the use of data and the likelihood of an event occurring - for example, when forecasting the weather.

The field of Spatial Awareness allows students to explore measurement as well as geometry to help them describe and explore the world around them. Students will learn to estimate, use measurement tools accurately, and better understand the various commonly-used units of measure. For example, students will gain a better understanding of how the sense of space is used in areas such as graphic design, construction and coding. Units of measurement used in today’s digital world, such as terabytes, and very small units of measurement, such as nanoseconds, will also be studied.

In this Numbers area, students will develop basic skills such as learning facts and solving mathematical problems in everyday life. By gaining an understanding of basic numeracy concepts and skills, students will be able to perform mathematical calculations efficiently and accurately. Students will develop confidence with different types of numbers, such as natural numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and integers, and will learn to use these skills in everyday life.

The Algebra field allows students to explore sequences and algebraic expressions. Students will learn to code and apply the mathematical modeling process to make predictions in everyday life.

The Financial Literacy field allows students to strengthen their skills and knowledge about the value and use of money. Students will learn to manage finances responsibly by developing a budget and develop a greater awareness of their consumption and contribution to the economic system, both locally and globally.
