Grade 5

This strand is about making sense of what students read, hear, or watch. Students integrate components of word-, sentence-, and text-level comprehension as they develop comprehension strategies, apply critical thinking skills to deepen their understanding of texts, and respond to increasingly complex texts.

This strand allows students to express their thoughts clearly in writing or through other media. Students learn how to find and use reliable information in their projects. Throughout the iterative text writing and creation process, students develop the skills to plan, research, draft, revise, edit, proofread, publish, and share their texts.

This strand is the language toolkit. Students build a strong foundation in the basics: oral and non-verbal communication, word reading and spelling, morphology, vocabulary, fluency, and language conventions.

This strand focuses on transferable skills, digital media literacy, and cross-curricular and integrated learning. Among other things, students learn to develop critical thinking skills, communicate effectively, navigate and interact safely with digital media, and make connections between what they learn in the classroom and the world around them, including diverse cultures and experiences.
